When I try to open Suitcase Fusion 8 for Mac OS, I get “Error Starting FMCore: Error 167776261”.
This article covers all versions of Suitcase Fusion 8 running on all supported versions of Mac OS.
If you have just upgraded from a previous version of Suitcase Fusion, the type core from the previous version does not get shut down properly in some cases, and Suitcase Fusion 8 cannot connect to it. Restarting your Mac resolves the problem.
If you still get the same error messages, stop the Suitcase Fusion type core and remove the .Extensis folder and the preference files by hand. After that, Suitcase Fusion should open correctly.
Stopping the Suitcase Fusion type core
- Open Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor)
- Look for any FMCore processes; if you find any, force them to quit (View > Quit Process)
Removing the .Extensis folder
- Open a Terminal window (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
- Enter the following command and press Enter to remove the .Extensis folder:
rm -rf ~/.Extensis
If the .Extensis folder is being removed properly by Suitcase Fusion, you will get an error that says “rm: .Extensis/: No such file or directory”; this is normal.
Removing Suitcase Fusion preference files
Go to /Users/username/Library/Extensis/ and drag the com.extensis.FMCore-LaunchInfo.conf file to the Trash. Then, go to /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ and drag the following files to the Trash, if present:
Open Suitcase Fusion; it should open successfully.
NOTE: By default, the user’s Library folder is not visible in the Finder. To reach the Library folder, hold the Option key down and click on the Go menu in the Finder; there will now be a “Library” menu option with no keyboard shortcut.
Selecting “Library” takes you to the user’s Library folder.
Suitcase Fusion 8 stores background process information for the type core in a hidden folder named “.Extensis” in your home folder. In some cases, that information does not get cleared when Suitcase Fusion quits. In rare cases, a damaged preference file will keep Suitcase Fusion from connecting to the type core.
