Universal Type Server - Requirements and Recommendations

Universal Type Server can be installed locally (“on premises”) to dedicated Windows Server or macOS instances, or to Windows Server residing within cloud-hosted environments such as Amazon EC2 or Microsoft Azure.

Local System Requirements

These are the minimum requirements to install and launch the server component of Universal Type Server. In most cases you will need more in the way of server resources: more processor cores, more RAM, and more hard drive space. The Recommendations section can help you decide on the right server configuration for your needs.

Windows

• Windows® Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, or Windows Server 2019
  (Windows 2019 is not supported for use with FontLink for Adobe InDesign Server)
• 2.0 GHz or faster multi-core processor
• 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended)
• 2 GB available hard drive space for application files, plus additional space for fonts

macOS

• macOS™ 10.12 through 10.14
• 2.0 GHz or faster Intel® processor
• 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended)
• 2 GB available hard drive space for application files, plus additional space for fonts

Local System Recommendations

• Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019

• macOS 10.12 through macOS 10.14

NOTE: System RAM is the total amount of memory installed in the server; UTS RAM is the amount of memory allocated to Universal Type Server. The allocated RAM needs to be increased for large numbers of workgroups or LDAP users.

Cloud Hosting Decision Points

Cloud hosting is an excellent option if you do not have a local data center. Font files are relatively small, so drive space is usually not an important consideration.

A cloud-hosted solution will run on Windows Server 2016 or 2019.

Whether cloud-hosted or on-premises, Universal Type Server can take advantage of your organization’s Active Directory with LDAP Bind, and Single Sign-On.

Amazon EC2 System Recommendations

If you wish to set up an Amazon EC2 instance for use with Universal Type Server, then use the following recommendations:

• Choose the Amazon Machine Image (AMI) with Windows Server 2016 Base or Windows Server 2019 Base
• Choose an Instance Type based on the edition of Universal Type Server that you will be using:
