Activated PostScript Type 1 fonts found in Suitcase Fusion are displaying as blanks in the
drop-down menu for fonts, aren't appearing in applications/application menus. Strange characters and blank lines display when I switch between Type 1 fonts and fonts of other formats.
This article covers Suitcase Fusion version 21 and Suitcase Fusion 20.0.7 on all supported versions of the Windows and Mac operating systems.
This is due to Postscript Type 1 fonts aging and becoming increasingly unstable.
Postscript Type 1 fonts were introduced by Adobe in 1984 and are nearly 40 years old. Due to their being based on older algorithms and the incredible change of technology in the time since their introduction, they have become increasingly unstable. As a whole the industry is moving away from Type 1 fonts and even Adobe has announced that they are dropping support for Type 1 fonts in 2021:
"This legacy format, created by Adobe in the mid-1980s during the early days of desktop publishing, is already unsupported in major software applications, open-source libraries, and mobile platforms. The time has now come to sunset support in Photoshop, allowing us to better focus on innovative new typographic efforts as we look to the future.
It’s our goal to provide users with enough advance notice to make any required changes to affected documents. The successor to Type 1, OpenType was released in 2000 and offers significant typographic advantages."
There are currently no plans to try to prolong the support of these fonts in Extensis Applications. We would recommend sourcing OpenType or Truetype fonts of the same font families and phasing out any Type 1 fonts you may have.
Some users have been successful in installing the PostScript Type 1 fonts into Font Book directly however this is likely a band-aid for a larger issue.
Since Font Book is not an Extensis product, please use the following article from Apple on how to install fonts into Font Book.
