Suitcase Fusion will update font vaults created in older versions of Suitcase Fusion. Sometimes, an older font vault won't update properly: it may have been updated through many older versions of Suitcase Fusion or it may be damaged.
Below are some best practices for avoiding problems when upgrading from an older version of Suitcase Fusion.
Using cloud libraries to recreate your font vault (SF7 through SF v21)
Suitcase Fusion v18 (Suitcase Fusion 7) introduced personal and shared cloud libraries for standalone and Suitcase TeamSync users. Personal cloud libraries were called "TypeSync" libraries until Suitcase Fusion v22.
When you convert your local libraries to cloud libraries, Suitcase Fusion copies your font and set information to the Extensis servers; when you log in on another computer, Suitcase Fusion downloads your cloud libraries automatically. Cloud libraries work across versions of Suitcase Fusion so you can use it to create a new font vault.
Note: You must convert your local libraries to cloud libraries before installing the new version of Suitcase Fusion. For more information, go to Put your Fonts in the Cloud.
- Open Suitcase Fusion and select your font library from Local Libraries
- Choose File > TypeSync > Enable TypeSync (SF v21, SF9 and SF8) or File > TypeSync > Enable Library Sync (SF7)
Suitcase Fusion converts the library into a cloud library and uploads the contents. If you have more than one local library, you must select and convert them individually.
Exporting the fonts from your font vault (all versions)
You can export your fonts and sets from an older version of Suitcase Fusion, then import them into the new Suitcase Fusion font library. You can also use this process to migrate your Suitcase Fusion setup from one computer to another computer.
Note: This method does not preserve any custom styles, classifications, or keywords.
You don't have to collect cloud libraries out of the font vault; they will be recreated automatically. Local libraries have a dark gray folder icon in SF7, and older versions of Suitcase Fusion did not have cloud libraries.
- Open Suitcase Fusion
- Select your local font library
- Choose File > Collect Fonts for Output; you must select a location for the collected fonts
- Select your desktop and click Collect
Suitcase Fusion creates a Collected Fonts folder and place copies of your fonts inside. Rename this folder to "All Suitcase Fusion Fonts" for later.
This method can be used to collect sets, as well.
- Select a font set in your Font Library
- Go to File > Collect Fonts for Output
- Select your desktop again and click Collect. Suitcase Fusion creates another Collected Fonts folder and places the fonts in a folder with the same name as the set.
Repeat these steps for each set you want to preserve, then rename the Collected Fonts folder to "Suitcase Fusion Sets".
Note: If you have more than one local library, the previous steps should be repeated for each library. Label your collected fonts and collected sets according to the library they come from. We recommend that you zip up copies of your collected fonts and sets and keep them in a safe place.
Installing the new version of Suitcase Fusion
Once you've finished preparing for the upgrade, you can remove the old version of Suitcase Fusion if you are upgrading on the same machine. For more information, go to Uninstalling Suitcase Fusion.
You may need an uninstaller for older versions of Suitcase Fusion:
- Suitcase Fusion v21 uninstaller
- Suitcase Fusion 9 (v20) uninstaller
- Suitcase Fusion 8 (v19) uninstaller
- Suitcase Fusion 7 (v18) uninstaller
- Suitcase Fusion 6 (v17) uninstaller
Once the old version has been removed, you can install the new version of Suitcase Fusion. Suitcase Fusion will recreate any cloud libraries when you log in to the new version.
Recreating your font vault by hand
Drag your "All Suitcase Fusion Fonts" folder onto your Font Library to have Suitcase Fusion add the fonts the library. Once you have added the fonts, you can remove the "All Suitcase Fusion Fonts" set without removing the fonts from the font vault.
Open the "Suitcase Fusion Sets" folder and drag the set folders onto your Font Library. Suitcase Fusion will create sets with the same name as the folders, and add the fonts to their respective sets.
