Moving to Monotype Connect ( from Suitcase Fusion )

This article will help you make the move from Suitcase Fusion or Suitcase TeamSync to Monotype Connect.

The biggest change you will notice is that Monotype Connect has a web component for performing most of your font management and activation tasks.

Monotype Connect also includes team sharing and management, similar to those features previously available in Suitcase TeamSync.

NOTE: You perform steps 1 through 5 in your current installation of Suitcase Fusion; after that, you’ll be using the Monotype Connect desktop app.

Step 1: Move local libraries to the cloud

Suitcase Fusion includes a feature called TypeSync, that lets you keep your libraries synchronized with another computer.

Monotype Connect also uses these libraries to sync between your personal computers.

In order to take advantage of this feature, move your local libraries to the cloud.

1. Start Suitcase Fusion.

2. Select each of your local libraries, one at a time.

   In Suitcase Fusion, local libraries have this icon: .

3. ChooseFile > Cloud Libraries > Convert to Personal Cloud Library.

   Suitcase Fusion will move your library to the cloud.

4. Repeat these steps until you have converted all of your local libraries to Personal Cloud Libraries .

Step 2: Stop using Google Fonts

With Monotype Connect, the Google Fonts library is now a cloud library.

When you stop using Google Fonts in Suitcase Fusion, you will speed up the process of backing up your fonts (which is next).

• To turn off Google Fonts, choose File > Disable Google Fonts.

Step 3: Back up your Font Vault

The Font Vault is the local repository where Suitcase Fusion stores and manages your fonts.

1. Choose File > Font Vault Archive > Archive.

2. Suitcase Fusion will need to stop the Type Core in order to archive your Font Vault. To proceed, click Archive.

3. Enter a name for the archive and choose the destination where Suitcase Fusion will save it, then click Save.

Store the archive file somewhere safe in case you need to retrieve it.

Step 4: Update other apps

If you are using Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, Apple iWork, Sketch, Affinity apps, or any other productivity apps, you should update those applications before you continue.

Step 5: Update to Monotype Connect

The best and easiest way to update from Suitcase Fusion to the Monotype Connect desktop app is to let Suitcase Fusion do it for you.

1. Start Suitcase Fusion.

   If the application alerts you that there is an update, then read through the release notes and continue to install the update.

2. If you don’t receive an alert about an update, you can check for one manually.

   • On macOS, choose Suitcase Fusion > Check for Updates.

   • On Windows, chooseHelp > Check for Updates.

3. Suitcase Fusion will download the update then prompt you to install it. ClickInstall and Relaunch(on Windows, the button is labeledInstall, but it will still launch the app after the update) to finish the update.

When the application restarts, it will be named Monotype Connect.

Step 6: Plug-in power: Activate!

When Monotype Connect starts, it may alert you that it has newer plug-ins to install. At the prompt, click Yes to update all your plug-ins. (You will see this alert if the plug-ins themselves have been updated, if you have newer versions of any of the supported applications, or if you have eligible applications that you have not installed plug-ins for.)

If you do not update your plug-ins when you are prompted, you can update them later by clicking on the cloud icon then click 'Manage my installed plug-ins'.

Step 7: Connect on the Web

Monotype Connect includes both the desktop app and the Monotype Connect Web app. The Web app has additional features not available in the desktop app.

The desktop app has two toolbar buttons that connect with the Web app.

will open your browser and log you in to Monotype Connect.

will open the browser, log you in, and display information about new web-only features.

Connecting with Safari

Safari requires an extension in order to allow it to activate fonts through the desktop app.

1. Quit Safari.

2. Download the extension from the Mac App Store.

3. Move the extension, named Monotype Connect for Safari, into your Applications folder.

4. Start the Monotype Connect for Safari application.

5. Click the button labeledQuit and Open Safari Extension Preferences.

   This will register the new extension with Safari.

6. In the Safari Preferences window, be sure that the Monotype Connect for Safari extension is turned on.

7. Close the Preferences window.

The Monotype Connect buttons in the desktop app will now work as expected with Safari.
