Description
This article will discuss what Universal Type Server and Client directories which will need to be excluded from antivirus software to ensure Universal Type Server and Universal Type Clients run properly.
Solution
You should add the UTS and Client databases, vault and backup folders to your antivirus solution's exception list. Below is a list of default locations and another that shows where to check for custom locations.
Universal Type Server Default Locations are:
Windows: The default locations are:
- C:\Program Files\Extensis\Universal Type Server\data\backups
- C:\Program Files\Extensis\Universal Type Server\data\vault
- C:\ProgramData\Extensis\UTS\pgdata
Mac: The default locations are:
- /Applications/Extensis/Universal Type Server/data/backup
- /Applications/Extensis/Universal Type Server/data/vault
- /Library/Extensis/UTS/pgsql
Custom Locations:
To check if your UTS is using custom locations, log into the UTS Server Administration web application (default port 18081) and look under:
- Datastore -> Database (Enterprise edition only)
- Datastore -> Move/New
- Datastore -> Schedule Backups
Apply exclusions to any custom locations set there as needed.

Universal Type Client Default locations are:
Mac: The default location is:
- /Library/Extensis/UTC/
The Universal Type Client application in /Applications should also be excluded from scanning; Universal Type Client copies its auto-activation plug-ins out of the application bundle during installation.
Windows: The default locations are:
- C:\Program Files\Extensis\Universal Type Client\ (UTC version 6 and later)
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Extensis\Universal Type Client\ (UTC version 5 and earlier)
- C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Extensis\
NOTE: The AppData folder is hidden by default. To view the contents of the folder, enter the complete path in the address bar of a Windows Explorer window, or paste in %localappdata% and navigate to the folder from there. To view hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer by default:
- Go to Control Panel > Folder Options
- Select the View tab
- Under “Hidden files and folders”, select “Show hidden files, folders, and drives” and click Apply
