VPN Connections
Portfolio is an on-premise software: the software is designed to work while in your local office environment. There are many technologies that can establish a remote connection into your local office. Virtual Private Network (VPN) is the most common of these. A VPN connection enables a user to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if they were doing so from their local office environment. While all environments are different, the main element is to make sure that the necessary ports are accessible to the server via the VPN connection. For Portfolio, you will need ports 8090 and 8091 open. (Ports may differ if your administrator has changed them within the application.) This configuration and set up would depend solely upon your company’s IT staff.
Public-Facing Servers
Some companies may opt to make their Portfolio server public-facing. This is essentially the same as how a web server would allow you to access webpages anywhere on the internet. While this is not necessarily a recommended configuration (due to the potential security risks) the same principles that were applied to the VPN connection hold true. Ports 8090 and 8091 will need to be open on the server to allow users to login and administrate Portfolio.
